What is DSE?
Friday, 22 July 2016 00:00

desk and userDisplay Screen Equipment (DSE) is a screen that displays information such as text, numbers and/or graphics, and is commonly called a computer screen, monitor or VDU. DSE usually forms part of a computer system or computer and includes the use of any associated peripheral equipment such as a keyboard, mouse and workstation.

What are the risks?

Health risks can occur if the workstation is not set up comfortably and correctly for the employee's individual needs. Common complaints associated with poor or incorrect DSE use can include pain in the upper arms, hands, neck and shoulders and back, eye strain and fatigue or stress. These complaints can be caused by:

  • Sitting too long in one position, particularly if you're on a chair that is incorrectly set up or not designed for DSE use
  • Insufficient breaks
  • Awkward positioning of equipment on the desk
  • High workloads

DSE and the law

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 regulate the use of DSE within the workplace. These regulations only apply to employers whose employees regularly use DSE as a significant part of their normal daily work (daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more). The employer has a duty of care to:

  • Ensure assessments are carried out when a new employee starts or when significant changes are made the existing workstation, to reduce and minimise health risks
  • Plan the working day to ensure they include regular breaks or changes of activity for the employee
  • Provide eye and eyesight tests on request, as well as special spectacles if required
  • Provide information and training
